The 4th Annual ole pop+urban songcamp in L.A., in Partnership With Bucks and Atlantic Records, Channels 'Ghosts' of Historic Studio to Produce Almost 40 Great Songs

The recent five-day ole pop+urban songcamp in Los Angeles, hosted by ole and co-sponsored by U.K.-based Bucks Music Group, two of the world's largest independent music publishers, has resulted in the delivery of close to 40 great songs by the 15 world-class songwriters, producers and artists in attendance for the consideration of participating label, Atlantic Records.

At the L.A. songcamp in early October, writers from ole, Bucks Music Group and Strengholt Music Group collaborated to build hit singles for a select trio of superstar artists on the Atlantic Records label: Cody Simpson, the young Australian pop/R&B singer/songwriter discovered on YouTube by Grammy-nominated record producer, Shawn Campbell; American rapper, recording artist, film and music producer and record executive, T.I., and American rapper, producer and record executive, Lupe Fiasco.

With the goal of increased placement success, a trademark of the ole songcamps is the dedicated purpose for which each is organized. Using this model over their short history, the camps have generated multiple song placements including "Cause A Scene" (Teairra Mari featuring Flo Rida), "Loving You Is Easy" (Meg Pfeiffer), "Superman" (Abraham McDonald) and four cuts on the Hanni und Nanni film soundtrack recorded by Shiloh, The Veronicas and The Black Sheep.

This fourth edition of ole's pop+urban songcamp, with support from PROs ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SOCAN, took place in a year when ole has enjoyed unprecedented Creative success as a result of building community-based, international creative events and combining them with traditional song-plugging efforts. The event, which has been successful in creating enduring collaborative relationships across borders and genres while shaping the music trends of tomorrow, was held at the iconic Westlake Recording Studios in West Hollywood where, in its historic studio D, Michael Jackson's Bad album was recorded. No doubt channelling the creative spirit of both Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, the L.A. camp mirrored previous ole songcamps for the sheer number and quality of fresh, innovative pop/urban songs created, which are already stirring strong interest from A&R at Atlantic Records.

Bob Hunka, SOCAN's L.A. representative, was on hand at Friday's breakfast to offer words of wisdom and encouragement to the writers. Of ole, Hunka commented: "Real publishers invest in real writers, who write real songs. The exceptional number of copyrights generated at ole pop+urban songcamp sessions have originated, in part, with an inspirational, artist-friendly environment like Westlake. It is conducive to a collaborative songwriting event such as this which brings together world-class songwriters from Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Europe and focuses their energy and spontaneity. It also gives them the opportunity to network and engage in business discussions with key decision-makers in other media, from film and TV to record A&R, in an intimate setting. Atlantic Records A&R Executives Chris Morris and Success, were on hand at the L.A. camp to provide direction as they met the writers and offered guidance, encouragement and insights into the kind of music their artists are looking for. ole Senior Creative Manager Elizabeth Spear presented the first day briefing to the writers and gave out room assignments. Each day, breakfast was delivered to Westlake at 10:00 a.m. and the writers were assigned their work studio and writing partners. Five studio rooms were utilized at Westlake with three writers assigned daily to each of them.

Participating writers in the songcamp included David Kopatz (Jordin Sparks, Abraham McDonald), Tebey (Flo Rida, Veronicas), Damon Elliot (P!nk, Mya, Keyshia Cole), Steven Lee Olsen (Westlife, Jason Derulo), Malay (John Legend, Danity Kane), Prime, Shiloh (Universal recording artist), Jake Gosling (Wiley), Femke (Dutch recording artist), Sean Conlon (former recording artist with 5ive), Paul Lewis, McLean (Asylum UK recording artist), J2K (UK-based MC), Carl Utbult (Jason Crabb) and Dru (Universal recording artist).

"The ole pop+urban songwriting camp was really amazing and extremely well executed," said songwriter Sean Conlon. "ole really took care of making everyone comfortable and their attention to detail was beyond compare. The writers were talented and high calibre which led to a very productive week with some great songs being written. If I had another opportunity to attend an ole/Bucks songwriting camp, I would do so without hesitation."

"The ole pop+urban songwriting camp, in conduction with Bucks Music Group, was a great way to focus on getting quality tracks written with pro writers in a great vibe," observed producer/songwriter Jake Gosling. "Each day you're in the studio with different writers starting with a blank page; we take it from there. At the end of the day, you have a track recorded and written. By the end of the week, you can have six tracks or more completed. The whole set up was really slick and well organized. The most important thing about these writing weeks is the publishers stand out from the crowd and get behind their writers, which is what every writer wants their publisher to do. All in all an awesome week."

This is the second songcamp initiative for ole and Bucks this year. In May, the companies co-hosted a successful songcamp in London, England, which brought together more than 30 songwriters as they focused on creating great songs for some of the top artists from the featured participant, Island Def Jam Music Group, including Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Abraham McDonald, Jennifer Lopez and Chrisette Michelle. Island Def Jam was represented by the company's Senior VP of A&R, Max Gousse.
